Because Words Matter

One of the adjustments one has to go through when living in a foreign country is the way one speaks. In many countries, English is one of the common languages that allows people of different tongues to talk to each other.  But the way people speak English may differ depending on where in the world they came from, adding to the complexity of communication.  Add to that is the power dynamics involved in language creation and proliferation.  It may not be obvious at the surface but the way foreign words are accepted as correct English, or nontraditional English syntax gets a nod is laden with power play.

So how do foreign words squeeze themselves into the English dictionary?

Join us in a talk with Dr Danica Salazar from the Oxford English Dictionary and learn how words get into the Oxford English Dictionary.  This talk is organized by the University of the Philippines Alumni Association (Singapore) (UPAAS) with the support of our sponsors: OED, PAL, PNB Singapore, KC Dat, SMU and Ayala Land. The event will be covered by Yahoo Singapore.

21 May 2016 | Saturday | 2-6pm | SMUX 3-1

The event is free but we encourage everyone to donate at least $10 for our UPAAS Scholarship Fund.   Register here http://goo.gl/forms/rbcShd5gwS
